![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Many of Bergman's stories imagine their subjects at the disappointing ends of exhausting lives, on the brink of giving up hope or already long past it perhaps unsurprisingly, the most successful tend to represent their subjects through the eyes of servants and friends, lovers and caretakers, rather than in first person.Īt their best, Bergman's portraits show these outliers carving out space for themselves away from a hostile society, yet unable to escape the power dynamics that permeate even the most idyllic retreat. We read them with an element of wish-fulfillment, searching for assurances that there were other ways to think and be, and yet knowing that no one really escapes the social grid - not even if they make like Carstairs and buy an island in the Bahamas. There's an allure to reading about the historical lives of women who bucked social conventions, even when they come, as they so often do, to a tragic end. ![]()
